With the clarity and quality that Blu-ray players can produce, manufacturers could have relaxed a bit and allowed the market to slowly move from DVDs to high definition Blu-ray players on their own. Sony have refused to let this happen and instead decided to push forward with features and capabilities that will make the first generation of Blu-rays seem out of date before the dust has begun to settle. The Sony BDP-S480 Blu-ray player is more connected, powerful, and useful than nearly any other Blu-ray player on the market.
The sleek Sony BDP-S480 is the perfect addition to any home cinema setup. It comes fully 3D capable when used in tandem with 3D glasses, a 3D capable television, and any videos or movies shot in 3D. At minimum, it produces high definition 1080p picture quality for the standard Blu-ray discs. For those with a large collection of high-definition DVDs this is the perfect way to ease into a Blu-ray home entertainment system. The Sony BDP-S480 will upscale the picture quality and clarity of any high-definition DVDs.
Nearly any Wi-Fi compatible phone or tablet PC, such as the iPad and iPhone, can be turned into full functioning remote with a completely free Media Remote app that can be installed from the iPhone/Android marketplace. On top of this, other computers around the house can wirelessly stream videos and pictures from their own hard drive to that of the Sony BDP-S480 for the perfect slide show or home movie screening.
This Blu-ray player also comes internet ready with a slew of excellent programs and services. Gracenote Metadata Service allows users to look up and explore information on any movie that they are currently watching. This includes searching out the actors, writers, and similar movies. The PartyStreaming technology allows the BDP-S480 to transmit music to wireless speakers anywhere in the house, meaning complete connectivity when it comes to a personal collection of albums. The Wi-Fi adaptor also has the option to stream music and videos directly from the thousands of websites which currently offer streaming shows, movies, and music.
The Sony BDP-S480 is the perfect option for anyone looking for a top end home cinema at a mid-range price. Sony managed to put all the features that anyone could ever need to play the best quality music, videos, and pictures in a single package.
What to consider before you buy the Sony BDP-S480 Blu-ray Player
Like the BDP-S470 before it, this model is a bit of a half way house between the entry level (but still fully featured) BDP-S380 and the BDP-S580. This model comes 3D Ready but not fully wireless ready as the UWA-BR100 USB dongle required to make it so is not included. If you plan to use the player wirelessly, the next model up (Sony BDP-S580) with wireless built in could prove to be better value.
Why you should buy the Sony BDP-S480 Blu-ray Player
At around £170, the suggested selling price of this Blu-ray player is only £20 more than the BDP-S380 which if you can, is worth stretching to for the DLNA compatibilty and 3D futureproofing. We may see price reductions on the entry level model over the next year though which could affect this decision, but for now, the BDP-S480 is one of the best around and certainly worth considering.
