Panasonic SC-PT870 DVD Home Cinema System

Panasonic SC-PT870The current range of DVD home cinema systems from Panasonic ends with with this, the top of the range SC-PT870.

The Panasonic SC-PT870 shares much with the other two models in the range, the SC-PT470 and SC-PT570 with the former offering 4 small speakers, the latter adding an improved subwoofer and taller front speakers, and the SC-PT870 completing the set with the tall speakers added to the rear as well.

We’ve discussed previously the benefits of taller speakers but it’s important to stress what a difference they can make to your system. High frequency sounds, the trebles, are the ones that give the movie soundtrack clarity and sharpness, and really open up the whole sound stage. This means that not only do you enjoy the powerfiul bass and mid range sounds, but it also ensure that every bullet hitting the floor, every window that a car smashes through, and every scream will sound crystal clear. Unfortunately, the trebles are the sounds that are the ones that are most easily absorbed by soft furnishings such as curtains and carpets, and they are also the most directional, meaning that the closer you can get the front speakers pointing towards your ears, the better. With taller speakers this is much more easily achieved because when seated, the speakers will be at pretty much ear height. Of course you can buy stands to place smaller speakers on, but it always going to be neater to have an integrated look and design.

The system overall outputs an impressive 1000W which should be more than enough for room filling sounds, and the ‘Kelton Type’ subwoofer provides impressive bass with minimal interference.

The main DVD player and amplifier unit of the Panasonic SC-PT870 is a neat affair with the integrated iPod dock providing a very neat solution to playing your music through the system without having to connect wires and separate docks. Connect the unit to your Viera television with a scart cable and you can also play iPod video through your television. The PT870 will also upconvert your DVD discs to 1080p giving you as near high definition quality as you can get from standard definition DVDs.

What to consider before you buy the Panasonic SC-PT870

Like the rest of the range, an HDMI input would have been welcome, but the optical input should suffice for most.

Why you should buy the Panasonic SC-PT870 DVD Home Cinema System

With tall speakers all round it is going to be easier to position and get the best from this system. Highly recommended. Rating: 4.5/5

  1. I am a home cinema beginner! I need to use a projector rather than a TV – are all in one systems such as this Panasonic one compatible with a projector as well?
Also, what is the disadvantage of not having HDMI?
    Thanks!

    1. As long as the projector has the inputs that match the systems outputs, which most do, you’ll be fine.

I have this one. It does what it says, but I find it kind of slow. I prefer playing DVDs on XBOX instead.
